Sanergy - Energetic Toilets

An idea not too dissimilar from Ikotoilet, Sanergy is a company that set up advanced toilet facilities across Africa. This time, toilet designs were seperated into commerical, residential and community and it was also an important goal of this company that these toilets be made available in schools. The design of the toilets are aimed at being easy to maintain, with the residential and community toilets being compact enough to be installed near homes. Commercial toilets are aimed to be ran as pay-per-use toilets by the business owner (Shields and Ruehle, 2016).

For convenience and added hygiene, all toilets are stocked with hand-washing and toilet paper utilities, which is unlike many other toilet facilities in the market. In addition, toilets have a removable cartridge which is to be collected and replaced daily by members of the Sanergy team. Waste is then transported to be co-composted with saw dust and microorganisms which causes the eradication of harmful pathogens, producing an organic fertiliser.

Pay-per-use costs are being kept at US$0.05 (Satterthwaite et al, 2015). Whilst this may seem like a small charge in the western world, for many households this is unaffordable, especially for larger families and use of the toilet more than once a day. Like Ikotoilet, Sanergy is also a facility open for multiple use by everyone, thefore there is the same risk of transferal of bacteria and viruses.
